Callie got through breakfast without telling Garrett that she was this close to calling off Operation: Romeo. The whole concept of trying to seduce Dylan had started sounding like the worst idea ever conceived, and time wasn’t making it any better, especially since she hadn’t even so much as glimpsed the other Van Doren brother since the botched wedding ceremony.

It was like he’d ceased to exist. And all she saw was Garrett. In her dreams. Forefront in her mind when awake and savoring the memory of that sunset kiss on the beach. At breakfast, where he scarcely spoke to her and his hazel eyes rarely wandered in her direction.

She was trying really hard to pretend he wasn’t mad at her for kissing him, though she was pretty sure he was. Well, she was mad at herself too, but honestly—how was she supposed to help it when he’d given her that impassioned speech about taking what she wanted? He’d been standing there all delicious and a little windblown, bathed in the dark colors of sunset, and she’d been convinced there was a vibe going on that would have made not kissing him a crime.

Big, big mistake. She’d probably ruined the friendship she’d thought was blossoming between them.

As soon as he could extract himself from her clutches, he’d shifted her right back into a conversation about Dylan. As he should have. Garrett wasn’t at a place where he could sink into a quicky resort fling—how clear did he have to make his wishes? He’d literally asked her to shield him from that, and she’d jumped on the opportunity to do the exact opposite, never mind that going with impulse was the whole name of the game.

Garrett’s distance this morning cut through her far more deeply than she’d have guessed. They’d been so tight over the last couple of days, laughing and bonding. The only two members of the All-Star Rejects stuck together. Or at least that’s what had been happening until she’d screwed it up.

So she suffered through breakfast and nodded when Garrett told her he’d text her later to let her know when and where to show for her meetup with Dylan. Probably the panicky feeling in her stomach would go away once she got into the scene and stopped thinking of it as an ambush. After all, talking to Dylan would be just like talking to Garrett, right? They probably had the same offbeat sense of humor, but Dylan hated nuts in food and liked women who actually ate their meals, unlike Garrett who inhaled coffee for breakfast and then no doubt ate Snickers wrapped with nut-studded brownies all day long.

The panicky feeling only got worse as the day dragged on and she didn’t see Garrett. They’d spent nearly the whole day together yesterday, and honestly, she missed him. Funny how quickly her one-on-one time with him had grown so precious.

Then came the text message that she’d been dreading.

Garrett: Dylan’s in my room. Knock on the door, and I’ll make an excuse to duck out.
